“We invite a multidisciplinary team of doctors and experts from the community to attend our monthly tumor board. We review and discuss the medical condition and treatment options for patients. We also investigate the newest approaches to providing cancer care.”
Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy is a term used to describe a type of therapy that stimulates the body’s natural immune system to fight cancer cells within the body. Our immune system is designed to differentiate between healthy cells and bad cells. When a foreign cell is recognized by the immune system (virus or bacteria) it produces cells specifically to set out and destroy these foreign bodies. Immunotherapy is used to trigger the immune system to use its natural defenses to fight off the cancerous cells.
Immunotherapy is not indicated for every patient with cancer. Research and clinical trials have proven that this therapy is only effective for specific types of cancers. Certain cancers respond differently to different treatments and our team at Cancer Care of North Florida will work closely with you to assess for the benefit of immunotherapy and create your individualized treatment plan.
Factors our cancer care team considers when recommending treatment options include:
- The type and subtype of cancer
- The stage of the cancer (how far it has spread)
- Results of other tests on the tumor, such as biomarkers, molecular profiling and genetic testing
- The patient’s age
- The patient’s overall health and current medications
- Other serious health problems (such as heart, liver, or kidney diseases)
- Types of cancer treatments given in the past
Types of cancer immunotherapy include:
- Checkpoint inhibitors
- Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs or MoAbs)
- Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy
- Cytokines
- Immunomodulators
- Cancer vaccines
- Oncolytic viruses
